grading curve
Relative scoring system
A grading curve is a method of adjusting test scores relative to how the class performed, typically raising grades so that a certain percentage of students receive each letter grade regardless of raw scores.
If an exam proves unexpectedly difficult, the professor might grade on a curve.
The practice can help or hurt individual students depending on how their peers performed.
