government surplus
Public sector leftovers
Government surplus refers to the excess of government revenue over expenditures during a fiscal period—the opposite of a deficit.
When tax receipts and other income exceed spending, the surplus can reduce national debt or fund new programs.
The term also describes excess goods sold off by the government, particularly military equipment and supplies: He bought his boots at a government surplus store.
