googol

Ten to hundredth

A googol is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros—10 to the 100th power.

The term was coined by a nine-year-old in 1920 when mathematician Edward Kasner asked his nephew to name an unimaginably large number.

It appears mainly in discussions of mathematics and astronomy to illustrate quantities beyond practical measurement.

The search engine Google takes its name from a misspelling of the word.
