The goal line is the boundary at each end of a football, soccer, or hockey field that the ball must cross to score.
In American football, it marks the front edge of the end zone: He stretched the ball across the goal line.
Figuratively, goal line describes last-moment situations: goal-line stand, goal-line defense.
