planned communities

Intentionally designed subdivisions

Planned communities are residential developments designed comprehensively before construction, with coordinated layouts for housing, streets, amenities, and often commercial areas.

Unlike neighborhoods that grow organically over time, these are built according to a master plan: They moved to a planned community with its own schools and shopping center.

The term covers everything from suburban subdivisions with homeowners' associations to ambitious "new towns" designed as self-contained cities.
