genre-savvy

Knows the conventions

Genre-savvy describes a character or person who recognizes the conventions, tropes, and patterns of the narrative genre they're in—and acts accordingly.

A genre-savvy horror movie character knows not to split up or investigate strange noises alone.

The term comes from fan communities analyzing fiction: The genre-savvy sidekick warned against reading the ancient book aloud.

By extension, anyone who recognizes familiar patterns in real-life situations and adjusts their behavior might be called genre-savvy.
