lampshading

Calling out yourself

Lampshading is a narrative technique where a writer acknowledges something implausible or clichéd in their own work, hoping the acknowledgment will make it more acceptable to the audience.

A character might say I know this sounds crazy, but... before describing an unlikely coincidence.

The term comes from the idea of drawing attention to something awkward rather than hiding it—hanging a lampshade on it.

Often used in screenwriting and fiction criticism: The movie lampshades its own plot holes.
