fourth-wall
Imaginary proscenium boundary
The fourth wall is the imaginary barrier between performers and audience in theater—the "wall" through which viewers watch the action.
To break the fourth wall is to acknowledge the audience directly, disrupting the fiction that they're observing real events.
The term extends to film, television, and video games where characters address viewers or otherwise signal awareness that they exist within a constructed narrative.
