generating functions
Polynomial sequence representations
A generating function is a mathematical device that encodes a sequence of numbers as coefficients of a power series.
Rather than studying a sequence directly, you package it into a function where the coefficient of each term captures the corresponding element: the sequence 1, 1, 2, 6, 24... becomes 1 + x + 2x² + 6x³ + 24x⁴...
Generating functions transform counting problems into algebraic ones, letting you use calculus and algebra to discover properties of sequences that would be difficult to see otherwise.
They appear throughout combinatorics, probability theory, and algorithm analysis.
