base case

Stopping point defined

A base case is the simplest instance of a problem that can be solved directly without further breakdown.

The term comes from computer science, where recursive functions need a base case to stop calling themselves: The base case for factorial is when n equals 1.

More broadly, any argument or analysis may establish a base case before handling complications.
