gay rights movement
LGBTQ liberation struggle
The gay rights movement is the ongoing effort to secure legal equality and social acceptance for homosexual and other sexually non-conforming people.
Beginning in earnest in the mid-20th century, it has fought for decriminalization of homosexuality, anti-discrimination protections, marriage equality, and broader cultural recognition.
The gay rights movement gained momentum after the Stonewall riots in 1969.
