Stonewall Inn
Historic bar, riots
The Stonewall Inn is a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, site of the 1969 Stonewall riots that catalyzed the modern LGBTQ rights movement.
Police raids on the bar sparked days of protests, and the anniversary is commemorated annually as Pride.
The name has become shorthand for queer resistance: the generation after Stonewall, pre-Stonewall attitudes toward homosexuality.
