DOMA

Clinton-era marriage statute

DOMA is the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 U.S. federal law that defined marriage as between one man and one woman for federal purposes and allowed states to refuse recognition of same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

The Supreme Court struck down its core provision in 2013, ruling it unconstitutional.
