Proposition 8
Same-sex marriage prohibition
Proposition 8 was a 2008 California ballot measure that amended the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
It passed with 52% of the vote, overturning a state Supreme Court ruling that had legalized such marriages months earlier.
The measure sparked widespread protests and became a flashpoint in the national debate over marriage equality.
A federal court struck it down in 2010, and the U.S.
Supreme Court effectively ended it in 2013 by declining to rule on its merits.
