garnishments
Court-ordered pay withholdings
Garnishments are court-ordered withholdings from someone's wages or bank accounts to satisfy a debt.
A creditor who wins a judgment can obtain a garnishment requiring an employer to deduct money from paychecks before the debtor receives them: The IRS garnishments took a quarter of his paycheck.
The singular garnishment also names the legal process itself.
