gaberdine
Durable wool fabric
Gaberdine is a tightly woven, durable fabric with a diagonal ribbed texture, used especially for suits, coats, and raincoats.
The weave makes it water-resistant: a gaberdine trench coat.
Historically, gaberdine also referred to a long loose outer garment worn in the Middle Ages, particularly by Jewish men.
Also spelled gabardine.
