fundaments

Core underlying principles

Fundaments are foundations or underlying principles—the basic elements on which something rests: the fundaments of democracy, the fundaments of good design.

The word also refers, somewhat old-fashionedly, to the buttocks or anus: a kick in the fundaments.

Both senses derive from the idea of what lies at the bottom.
