fundamental laws
Governing basic rules
Fundamental laws are the basic principles that form the foundation of a legal or political system.
In constitutional contexts, they are the supreme rules from which all other laws derive authority and against which ordinary legislation is measured.
The phrase also applies to scientific principles considered universally true: the fundamental laws of physics.
The constitution establishes the fundamental laws of the republic.
