fundamental unit
Smallest essential component
A fundamental unit is a base measurement that cannot be broken down into simpler units—meter for length, kilogram for mass, second for time.
These form the foundation from which all other units are derived: velocity combines meters and seconds, force combines all three.
The seven fundamental units of the SI system underlie all scientific measurement.
