frontierman

Early American explorer

A frontierman is a man who lives on the frontier—the edge of settled territory, where civilization meets wilderness.

The term evokes American expansion westward in the 18th and 19th centuries: Daniel Boone was the archetypal frontierman.

Frontiersman is the more common form.
