frontier war
Expansion-era armed struggle
A frontier war is armed conflict occurring at the edges of expanding settlement or colonial territory, typically between indigenous peoples and encroaching settlers or military forces.
The term often appears in Australian and American historical contexts: The frontier wars devastated Aboriginal populations.
Such conflicts are characterized by irregular warfare, raids, and massacres rather than formal battles between standing armies.
