freak wave

Sudden ocean monster

A freak wave is an unusually large ocean wave that appears unexpectedly, often in otherwise moderate seas.

Also called a rogue wave, it can be twice the height of surrounding waves and poses serious danger to ships: The vessel was struck by a freak wave and capsized.

Once dismissed as sailor legend, freak waves are now documented by oceanographers.
