fourth wall break
Character addresses viewers
A fourth wall break is when a character in a story acknowledges the audience directly—speaking to the camera, addressing readers, or otherwise revealing awareness of being in a fictional work.
The term comes from theater, where three walls form the stage and an invisible fourth wall separates performers from viewers.
Breaking it creates comic effect, intimacy, or unsettling self-awareness: Deadpool's constant fourth wall breaks are part of his character.
Also called breaking the fourth wall.
