forgers

Makers of fakes

Forgers are people who create fraudulent imitations—most often of signatures, documents, currency, or artwork.

A forger of checks signs someone else's name; a forger of paintings produces fake Vermeers.

The word also applies to metalworkers who shape metal by heating and hammering, though this sense is less common today: The forgers worked the iron at their anvils.
