food guarding
Defensive mealtime behavior
Food guarding is protective behavior animals display over their meals, growling, snapping, or tensing when others approach while they eat.
The term appears most often in dog training contexts, where it describes a common behavioral problem: The rescue dog showed food guarding from day one.
The behavior extends to treats, bones, or anything the animal perceives as a resource worth defending.
