flocculate

Gather into clusters

To flocculate is to clump together into fluffy, woolly masses.

The term appears most often in chemistry and water treatment, where particles in a suspension aggregate into larger clusters called floc: The water treatment plant uses chemicals to flocculate suspended particles for easier removal.

Flocculation can occur naturally or be induced to clarify liquids.
