flechettes

Small metal projectiles

Flechettes are small, dart-shaped projectiles designed to be fired in clusters from artillery shells, rockets, or shotgun rounds.

The steel darts disperse over a wide area, intended for antipersonnel use.

Military flechette rounds saw extensive deployment in Vietnam.

The word comes from French for "little arrow." The canister rounds released thousands of flechettes.
