flashboard
Temporary water barrier
A flashboard is a temporary board or panel placed atop a dam or spillway to raise the water level.
These boards can be removed or knocked down during high water to prevent flooding, allowing excess flow over the dam.
The term also applies to similar removable barriers in irrigation channels and mill races.
