flashboards
Temporary water barriers
Flashboards are temporary barriers placed on top of a dam or spillway to raise the water level behind it.
They're designed to be knocked down or swept away when water rises too high, preventing overflow damage to the permanent structure.
The term extends to similar removable panels used to control water flow in irrigation or flood management: The flashboards were lowered ahead of the storm.
