flails

Threshing tools; thrashes

Flails names two tools with similar swinging-chain designs.

The agricultural flail is a long handle with a shorter stick attached by a chain, used to thresh grain.

The weapon version substitutes a spiked ball for the stick.

As a verb, to flail is to swing wildly or thrash about without control: He flailed his arms trying to keep balance.

Someone who flails at a task struggles ineffectively: She flailed through the interview.
