three-and-outs
Quick offensive failures
Three-and-outs is a football term for offensive possessions that fail to gain a first down, forcing a punt after three plays.
A team plagued by three-and-outs can't sustain drives or control the clock: We had four three-and-outs in the first half.
The singular three-and-out describes a single such possession.
