safeties

Gridiron two-pointers

Safeties is the plural of safety.

In American football, a safety is a defensive player positioned deep in the backfield, or a two-point score when the offense is tackled in its own end zone: The team's safeties combined for twelve tackles.

On firearms, safeties are mechanisms preventing accidental discharge.

More broadly, safeties are precautionary measures or backup systems: We built in several safeties to prevent data loss.
