external drives
Plug-in backup devices
External drives are storage devices that connect to a computer from outside its case, typically through USB or other ports.
They provide additional space for files, backups, or media without opening the machine: I keep all my photos on an external drive.
The term distinguishes them from internal drives mounted inside the computer.
