expanding universe
Space stretching outward
The expanding universe is the cosmological observation that galaxies are moving apart from each other—space itself is stretching.
First established in the 1920s through measurements of distant galaxies, it implies the universe was once compressed into an extremely dense state (the Big Bang).
Evidence for the expanding universe comes from the redshift of distant light.
