ex-libris

Library stamp phrase

Ex-libris is a label or inscription indicating book ownership, typically pasted inside the front cover.

The Latin phrase means "from the books of" and precedes the owner's name: ex-libris John Smith.

Often shortened to ex libris or appearing on decorative bookplates, it marks a volume as belonging to a personal library.

Also used as a noun for the bookplate itself: She designed a custom ex-libris featuring an owl.
