etymologizing
Investigating word origins
Etymologizing is tracing the origins and historical development of words—investigating how they evolved from earlier forms or were borrowed from other languages.
The term can describe scholarly linguistic work or informal speculation about word origins: He spent the evening etymologizing, convinced that "goodbye" came from "God be with ye".
Sometimes used dismissively for amateur guesswork about language.
