equal sign
Mathematical equivalence marker
The equal sign (=) is a mathematical symbol indicating that two expressions have the same value.
It appears in equations and formulas to show equivalence: 2 + 2 = 4.
In computing, the equal sign takes on additional roles, often serving as an assignment operator that stores a value in a variable, or doubled (==) to test whether two values match.
Outside math and programming, the symbol appears in casual writing to mean "equals" or "is the same as."
