eloping

Marrying without fanfare

Eloping is running away secretly to get married, typically without parental consent or a formal wedding: They eloped to Las Vegas.

The word once meant any secret escape, especially a wife leaving her husband for a lover, but now almost exclusively refers to impromptu marriages.

By extension, eloping can mean slipping away from any expected situation: We eloped from the party early.
