wage theft
Employer stealing earnings
Wage theft is an employer's illegal withholding of wages owed to workers.
It takes many forms: unpaid overtime, paying below minimum wage, forcing off-the-clock work, stealing tips, or misclassifying employees as independent contractors to avoid benefits.
The restaurant was sued for wage theft after workers discovered they'd been shorted on overtime for years.
