dry heaves
Vomiting without output
Dry heaves are the spasmodic motions of vomiting without expelling anything—the body's retching reflex when there's nothing left to bring up.
They often follow a bout of actual vomiting or occur with severe nausea: She spent the morning with dry heaves after the chemo treatment.
The singular dry heave names a single such spasm.
