dramaturg

Play's literary expert

A dramaturg is a theater professional who serves as a production's literary and historical advisor.

They research the context of plays, help directors and actors understand the text, and sometimes assist playwrights in developing new work.

The role originated in German theater and remains more common in Europe than America: The dramaturg prepared notes on 18th-century social customs for the cast.
