program notes
Performance background text
Program notes are the written commentary accompanying a performance, typically found in concert, theater, or dance programs.
They provide context about the works being performed—composer background, historical circumstances, musical structure, or interpretive insights.
The program notes explained that the symphony was composed during the composer's illness.
Good program notes enhance appreciation without requiring technical expertise.
