draft lottery

Military selection raffle

A draft lottery is a system for selecting individuals for compulsory military service by random drawing rather than sequential call-up.

The United States used draft lotteries during World War I, World War II, and most memorably during the Vietnam War, when young men watched televised drawings to learn if their birthdates would send them to war.

His number came up in the draft lottery.
