dot painting

Aboriginal artistic tradition

Dot painting is a technique of applying paint in small, distinct dots rather than continuous strokes.

The term most often refers to the traditional art of Indigenous Australians, where intricate patterns of dots create symbolic imagery representing Dreamtime stories and sacred geography.

Pointillism, developed by European artists in the 1880s, uses a similar method to blend colors optically: Up close it's just dots; step back and the image appears.
