disulfide bridges
Sulfur-sulfur protein links
Disulfide bridges are chemical bonds between two sulfur atoms, formed when sulfur-containing amino acids link together.
These bonds stabilize the three-dimensional structure of proteins, holding distant parts of a molecule in fixed positions relative to each other.
Hair's strength comes partly from disulfide bridges in keratin—permanent waves work by breaking and reforming them.
