cystine
Keratin's bonded pair
Cystine is an amino acid formed when two cysteine molecules bond together.
It appears in many proteins and is particularly abundant in keratin—the structural protein of hair, nails, and skin.
Cystine crystals can accumulate in the kidneys and urinary tract, causing a type of kidney stone: The patient was diagnosed with cystine stones.
