disk drives

Spinning platter readers

Disk drives are devices that read and write data on spinning magnetic or optical disks.

Hard disk drives store data on magnetic platters inside a sealed unit.

Optical drives handle CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs.

The term persists even as solid-state drives, which have no spinning disk, increasingly replace them: My laptop doesn't have a disk drive anymore.
