disfranchisement

Stripping ballot access

Disfranchisement is the act of taking away someone's rights, especially the right to vote.

The term appears most often in discussions of voter suppression and civil rights history: Literacy tests were tools of disfranchisement aimed at Black voters.

More broadly, disfranchisement can mean exclusion from any privilege or membership.

Also spelled disenfranchisement.
