path of destruction
Trail of wreckage
A path of destruction is the trail of damage left by something moving through an area—a tornado's path of destruction, a drunk driver's path of destruction.
The phrase emphasizes both the linear movement and the devastation along it: The hurricane carved a path of destruction across the Gulf Coast.
Figuratively, it describes anyone or anything causing sequential damage: The new CEO left a path of destruction through middle management.
