deer rifle

A deer rifle is a firearm designed or suited for hunting deer, typically a bolt-action or semi-automatic rifle chambered in a caliber powerful enough to take down medium-sized game at moderate distances.

The term describes function rather than a specific design—hunters choose deer rifles based on terrain, range, and local regulations: He inherited his grandfather's old deer rifle.
